Jonathan Monks

I’ve spent the last six years in a monk-like existence, the days devoted to exploring how sitting work can heal the spine and bring about natural states of meditation. Needless to say I barely noticed a difference when lock-down struck. But it is now time to share what I’ve found.

My self-practice may sound intense, but my style of teaching is light; more invitational than instruction, always framing and reframing fundamentals; preferring a student learns through direct experience rather than theories.

Session

C5 The Full Yogic Breath (ZOOM)
Date: Friday 29 Apr 2022 Time: 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

The class will begin with a sequence of standing shapes which offer the chance to discern the three flavours, which make up the full yogic breath, and helps free the connective tissue of each area to help naturally deepen the breath.

We will then move from standing to supine, and see how much we can allow the breath without the bodily movement, and maybe get a chance to see how this can be the prelude to Ujjayi and Maha Bhunda Ujjayi pranayama.

We will end the workshop with a short pranayama sitting practice.

Please note this is a hybrid session taught in-person and also via Zoom.

The Zoom link and recording can be found under your Account once you have completed your purchase.

J3 Steady and Comfortable Sitting
Date: Saturday 30 Apr 2022 Time: 8:00 pm - 9:30 pm

This class will be centred around seated forward bends and gentle backbends, where you’ll be encouraged to see the importance of using the hips and legs as the foundation for your spine.

The aim is for you to feel your spine engaged, enlivened; to deepen the role of your spine in the process.

Connection is key, flexibility follows, and we will be exploring the mechanics of how to open your hips too.

Simply put, it’ll be a fun, effective, seated yoga class.

N3 The Structure of Sitting
Date: Sunday 01 May 2022 Time: 2:30 pm - 4:00 pm

In this workshop we will be looking at how the legs can become the foundations for a structure of sitting; where the legs, pelvis and spine can eventually form a vessel into which we pour our concentration. The better we build our structure, the fewer leaks, meaning greater ease in sitting comfortably, and in allowing mediation to occur.

Expect seated work, deep enquiry into internal sensations, and gaining better balance through the nervous system.

In short, we will be looking at how to find better physiological and neurological balance whilst sitting… whilst trying to have a little fun too.
